Raging Thunder Fitzroy island

Fitzroy Island is located only 45 minute from Cairns, Australia by fast catamaran and yet it is one of the most unspoilt islands adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef. The island has changed little since being named by Lt James Cook during his voyage of discovery back in 1770.

Fitzroy Island is one of 600 "Continental" or "High" islands on the Great Barrier Reef which means it used to be part of the mainland before rising waters separated this tranquil paradise. Over time a fringing coral reef surrounded the island, providing a sheltered home for a variety of fish and coral species.

This area now forms part the Inner Barrier, of the Central Region of the Great Barrier Reef. And so this area can be protected for future generations it is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, one of the several natural wonders of the World.

Not to be outdone, the Island's 339 hectares are covered in lush rainforest and granite outcrops which descend right to the waters edge. Home to a wide variety of native species, 96% of the island (324 hectares) is protected and managed as a National Park.

Between these two worlds we are truly privileged to be able to offer resort facilities with full unlimited access for our day trippers, and a variety of overnight accommodation options for our overnight guests. There are few places in the world which provide such a rich ecotourism experience, and our close proximity to Cairns makes a visit to these shores a MUST for your North Queensland holiday.
